Room for Inspiration: The Nook Cafe
This cozy coffee spot along Maginhawa will make your muggle dreams come true
From writing on leather-bound journals to bidding on Elder Wand replicas on eBay, it's safe to say that any true-blue Harry Potter fan would jump at every chance to bring the Wizarding World to life.
However, for owner Nikki Valdez-Guanio, collecting pieces of memorabilia wasn't enough—she wanted a place where aspiring witches and wizards can bond over coffee or a tall glass of Butterbeer, thus, The Nook Cafe was born.
Located along Maginhawa street, The Nook features interiors that would make every Potterhead's heart skip a beat—everything about the space is undeniably cool, but it is the Hogsmeade mural by ef. Studios that steals the show.
"I was very keen about who would do the mural because I was afraid they wouldn't be able to realize the vision I had—I wanted it to be dreamy, nostalgic and detailed, unlike the ones you'd see in other restaurants," explains Nikki. The best part? If you look closely, The Nook is painted as one of the shops in the village, too!
RL Tip: Murals are a great way to add visual appeal to your home! Can't decide on a design? Let these tips guide you.
Looking down from the loft, you'll find that the tables on the first floor form a pair of owl's eyes which add a quirky touch to the overall look of the cafe. Nikki explains, "It was my friend's idea—it's a tribute of sorts to Hedwig, plus, my Native American sign is an owl. I helped in painting the details of the tables, too." '
RL Tip: You don't always need a huge centerpiece to draw attention to your dining area. If you want to make a statement, pick furniture that has intricate details so you won't have to do much else.
Apart from the impressive collection of souvenirs from The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and the vignettes of limited edition toys, the Cupboard under the Stairs is a hit with visitors, too. Everyone is free to come in and curl up next to Dobby while looking through the Marauder's Map or play with the soldier figures on the shelves.
Since she also wanted the space to be a proper hangout—a place where people can while the afternoon away—she personally curated a set of books and board games that anyone can borrow. "I've always loved to read, so most of my inspiration come from my favorite novels—mostly YA and Greek mythology stories," shares Nikki.
Whether you're still patiently waiting for your Hogwarts acceptance letter or finding a way to Platform 9 3/4, The Nook Cafe is worth the drive up North to play wizard for a day!
