Interior designer Vera Villarosa was asked to create a multifunctional space that could serve as a living area and a personal office for a work-at-home mom and her family. With this in mind, Vera designed two areas that would inspire the lady of the home and still appeal to the rest of her relatives.

Here are a few tips on how to furnish and decorate your own living area and home office.

Start with a color palette

In furnishing your home, you can begin by choosing the shades that appeal most to you. In this space, Vera chose bright shades like orange and fuchsia that the working mom will appreciate. However, since the area would also be used by the rest of the homeowner's family, it's important to pair the vibrant colors with neutrals like gray and black.

Pair pastels with metallic finishes

You can brighten up your space by complementing soft-colored accessories like this beige vase and pink planter with gleaming silver pieces.

Create an accent wall

No time to paint your wall or buy a painting? Spruce up a wall with a table topped with various decor for your home.

Don't scrimp on the details

Every living area can look better with the right pieces! Don't forget to get an area rug and a floor lamp for your own space. You can also choose a table lamp on a side table.

Use rugs to divide your space

Putting up a wall or bringing in a screen can make your space seem smaller than it really is.

To separate areas, you can simply opt for nice rugs. In this case, Vera defined the living area and home office with two floor rugs.

Try different soft furnishings

When it comes to decorating the home office or any other part of your space, you may want to stick with basic furniture pieces in safe colors. You can be more adventurous when it comes to the pillows, curtains, and rugs. After all, these pieces are usually cheaper and can be replaced much more easily.

Play with different pieces

In displaying your decor, always choose those with varying heights, colors, and proportions for an interesting look.
