To Do:

Replace all flickering, dim, or worn-out bulbs in your house. Be ready with a stash of extra light bulbs (preferably CFLs) in case a bulb goes out.

Tidy up loose electrical cords with cord organizers. Refrain from tucking them underneath rugs or carpets to avoid fire.

Deal with problematic appliances immediately, especially those that repeatedly blow a fuse as those are dangerous. If they can’t be fixed, replace them or take them to a recycling facility.

Buy LED Christmas lights for the holidays. These lights may be more expensive than the three-for-100 fairy lights, but they consume less electricity, are cool to the touch, and are much safer.

Update your electricals.

Replace incandescent bulbs with eco-friendly and long-lasting CFLs or LEDs. Screw in all bulbs tightly as loose connections may cause overheating. If you plan to add new appliances like ACs, call a qualified electrician to calculate the load for your electrical panel. Houses that are more than thirty years old may not have enough electric load capacity for an increased number of appliances.

Tip: In most homes, lighting accounts for almost 25 percent of the electric bill. Converting to CFLs and LEDs can cut down at least 70 percent of the cost.
