RL Tips: Creating a Kids' Zone

Transform a spare room at home into a kids' zone with these tips

Converting an unused room into your kids’ play room not only helps your child have his or her own space to play in, but also helps keep toys, activity books, and other sources of potential clutter all in one room. But before hauling your children’s things in, make sure that the room is safe for a little kid.

Keep these tips in mind:

“Children are prone to accidents because their motor skills are still developing,” says interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino.

To avert accidents, interior designer Joy Ejercito suggests to avoid installing slippery flooring. Having a carpet and using rubber mats are also a safe way to cushion the floor.

When choosing furniture, go for sturdy and functional pieces. “It is important to have a sofa where a parent and child can comfortably sit to read books. A table and several chairs are also important where the kids can do their arts and crafts,” says Joy.

Hannah also suggests creating a reading nook with shelves or a book rack. “You could have lounge chairs or a mat or rug on the floor where they could spend time in relaxed reading."

Like any area in the house, your child’s play room should be kept clean and orderly. Shelves for books, storage bins for toys, and cabinets for other supplies do the trick. “These should keep the room organized and minor accidents will be avoided such as tripping on the stuff lying on the floor,” says Joy. Hannah adds that having enough storage spaces will also teach your kids to “pack away” their things after use.

RL Tip: To make the play room more kid-friendly, “round sharp edges, use non-toxic paint, and avoid hazardous materials and toys,” says interior designer Hannah Acab-Faustino.
