Practicing the 3R's: reuse, reduce, and recycle can be daunting especially if you do not know where to start. The first step and probably the easiest way to start living an eco-friendly lifestyle is to create a recycling system that you and your family can easily follow and maintain.

Here are a few tips that may just come in handy.

Find a good location

Make recycling part of your daily routine by choosing a convenient spot that will make it easier for you and your family. The kitchen is an ideal spot because it is the area that accumulates most of your waste. Place environment-friendly bins inside your pull-out drawers or cabinets to keep them out of sight. If you plan to set it up outdoors, make sure you that you set it up properly to avoid a cluttered space.

Place color coded bins

It's recommended to get different containers to separate the biodegradable from the non-biodegradable items. You can also go the extra mile by color coding these containers and labeling them with pictures so that your kids will be informed, too.

Store items properly

Don't just dump used soda bottles and tin cans inside the garbage bins! Make sure you rinse it out first to avoid attracting pests in your recycling area. Make sure that the bins are tightly sealed or covered to avoid odors.

Know what to recycle

After cleaning out your pile, you can call your local junk shop or recycling center to sell your plastic bottles or newspaper. Consider reusing these items for your home, too. You can turn tin cans into pencil holders while you can reuse plastic bottles into hanging planters. Click here for more recycling ideas.
