Eight homeowners show us how to live large in tiny spaces

When people talk about their dream homes, a small space is not the first thing that comes to mind. People often dream of big houses with sprawling gardens, not a compact condo in the middle of the city. However, a tiny unit can be just as stylish and comfortable as any huge mansion.

Here are 8 small spaces that will inspire you to make the most of a limited (but lovely!) area:

Quirky and Industrial Condo Unit For her condo, homeowner Chiqui hired interior designer Frenjick Quesada to create an industrial space. After a six-month renovation period, the unit has been decorated with quirky, original pieces.

Starter Home for a Young Couple Tisha Alvarez-Angluben took the phrase “taking work home with you” to a whole new level. Having worked as the managing editor of Real Living for four years before becoming the editor-in-chief of Good Housekeeping Philippines, she took every tip she learned from her experience to decorate the townhouse she shares with her husband Hamil. With her arsenal of decorating ideas and her husband’s male perspective, they now have a home that features their unique tastes.

24sqm Bachelor Pad Although it was just a halfway home, Ryan Ong felt the need to make this 24sqm studio unit in Quezon City as comfortable as his real home. Ryan sought the help of interior designers Melissa Arriola and Kathleen Enriquez of 5 corners, a home store that specializes in furniture for small spaces, to create a lavish and comfortable home he can escape to after a long day’s work.

Victorian-Inspired Condo Unit For her 158sqm condo unit, homeowner Gina Domantay asked designer Dobie Aranda for a simple home with personality. To fulfill her request, Dobie took inspiration from Gina’s love for old and classical things to create a Victorian-inspired home.

Style and Function in a 60sqm Condo After her family invested in a 60sqm condo unit that could be rented out, Sandra Celestial sought the help of her friend, gallery owner Albert Avellana, to decorate the space. Since different tenants may have different preferences, Sandra asked Albert keep the space simple.

Building from the pieces that Sandra had already bought, Albert added a few more items such as plants and accessories to create a homey feel. Although the unit is basic and modest, it is now a beautiful home any tenant would be happy to live in.

East meets West Style in a 75sqm Unit Interior designer Lisa Salvador describes this 75sqm unit's look as a mix of Asian and European styles. The space was inspired by her client's celadon wares and Lisa’s own "obsession" with Scandinavian designer Hans Wegner's Wishbone Chair. "It's like a mix and match. It looks like a period style na it has European items with a twist of Asian," says Lisa.

40sqm Unit with Neutral Palette The Barreras’ second home serves as an extra space to accommodate their visiting relatives. It is also a great place for their children’s soirees and gatherings. The family removed bulky furniture that took up way too much room and used dual-purpose furnishings that can be used as storage solutions. The result is a functional unit that has enough space and reflects the family’s tastes.

A Bachelor Pad turned into a Couple’s Home Woowee and Ianne Evangelista decided to live in Woowee’s bachelor pad after they got married. They shied away from getting an interior designer or decorating the place right away because they wanted to see how their living and decorating preferences would mesh. If their current home – now comfortable and full of personality, without an air of pretentiousness – is anything to go by, this is a great idea.
