RL Picks: Top 5 Small Spaces for October

Find decorating ideas to turn a tiny home into a cozy and comfortable space

Living in the heart of the city has its share of advantages. More than anything else, city living allows one to be in the middle of everything. At a moment’s notice, you can easily visit the places that you like the most, from fancy restaurants and interesting stores, to practically everything in between.

However, the convenience and accessibility come with a price. Many city dwellers have to live in condos and apartments with limited floor areas. These cramped spaces can often leave little room for furniture and accessories of your choice.

To maximize your small area, we take a look back at some of our favorite homes in search of decorating ideas that you can use for your own space.

Find affordable pieces

In decorating her studio unit, wedding videographer Kat San Juan avoided spending more than P5,000 for every major furniture piece. She did this by patiently searching in furniture stores such as Our Home, Heima, and Dimensione. For more budget-friendly pieces, she also went to Dangwa, Dapitan, Japan Home Centre, and Shopwise.

Her budget finds include a white desk with a built-in ladder for P5,000, a pink folding chair for P1,000 (top photo), and a dress form for P1,000 (bottom photo).

Remove the walls

For this 49sqm condo of the Magto family, interior designer Kristine Neri-Magturo chose not to have too many walls. There are no walls dividing the kitchen, living, and dining areas to make the home seem airy and open.

Choose light colors

For this 60sqm townhouse, interior designer Wilan Dayrit wanted to create a bigger and brighter space. To do this, he replaced the dark floors with white tiles. He complemented the new floors with a neutral color scheme of cream, yellow, and gold. The light colors create an illusion of a more spacious area.

Keep it simple

Combined colors, patterns, and textures paired with too many personal belongings can be too much for a small area. A clean and streamlined look can open up the space. In line with this thought, interior designer Lisa Salvador chose predominantly white interiors with splashes of bright color for the studio unit of couple Erik and Therese.

The white ceiling and walls are paired with more white furniture and furnishings for a contemporary appeal.

Try wooden slats
Interior designer Frenjick Quesada visually expanded this 40sqm Makati unit with vertical wooden slats. Running from the floor to the ceiling, the vertical slats also made the space more interesting. The slats are complemented by a warm, earthy color palette and fully-upholstered furniture pieces.
