RL Picks: Christmas Decorating on a Budget

Celebrate the holidays with stylish decor that can spruce up your home even after the season has ended

Christmas may conjure up images of the usual balls and trees in traditional red and green, but unusual decor can convey yuletide cheer as well. A little out-of-the-box thinking can bring forth a fresh take on holiday decorating.

Unusual Christmas wreaths

Try a new twist on the classic Christmas wreath. Instead of faux pine ones, go for vine or wicker wreaths arranged in a group. Resist the urge to over-decorate -- sometimes all it needs is a beautifully tied bow.

Nesting Instinct

Pluck a wreath off its usual perch on the wall and lay it on a tabletop like a nest. Fill it with small faux birds, assorted balls, and even Christmas lights.

Light Fantastic

A freeform centerpiece can be fun! Group candles of various sizes in the center of a bowl (anchor the candles with sand at the bottom) and surround them with an assortment of bead garlands and balls in different sizes. Shiny stars provide a jolt of color.

Channel Twiggy

Line your container with floral foam (available at florist's shops) to keep the twigs in place. Add a handful of stars and mesh butterflies for hints of color. Try jewel tones -- purple, orange, turquoise blue-instead of red and green.

You can also put your sungkaan to good use by filling it with pretty balls and candles.

Why not look to your garden instead of heading out to the store? Instead of dumping them in the trash, make those fallen branches work for you and save money as well. Just remove dead leaves and sand off any rough edges.
