Having a garden is a beautiful way to improve any home. However, for some people, a lush green space is something they can only dream of. There are homeowners that simply do not have the time to tend to blossoming plants. There are also those that are limited by their small unit in the middle of a concrete jungle.

Here are a few garden ideas to add life to your personal space – green thumb optional!

Herb Gardens

When she’s not busy making adorable felt products for Artwine, her own DIY business, homeowner Beam tends to a delightful herb garden in her 30sqm bachelorette pad. Mint, basil, and other herbs are planted in charming pots and placed on top of a dainty cabinet. Rustic accessories like bird cages, candle holders and a wooden owl figure complete the space.

Real Living’s Best Real Home 2008 winners Jorem and Sheila also have their own herb garden in their Cavite house. Aside from being easy to maintain and taking up very little space, an herb garden is a great choice because it is useful. Herbs add flavor and nutritional value to food and also serve as a cure for various aches and pains.

Writer Mabi David also tried her hand at having an herb garden. Found in the balcony of her 30sqm condo in the city, the herb garden was started to freshen up the space. The potted plants are complemented with details like a teak bench, bird cage, and a quirky bird decor placed in a corner.

Rock Garden

Who says a garden has to be filled with flourishing plants? Follow the lead of the Japanese and make your own rock garden. Architect Lara Fernandez-Barrios and her husband JB did just that in their two-storey townhouse in the city. Originally built in the 1960s, the 208sqm house now has a rock garden with a clear roof. The transparent polycarb roof allows the light to seep through to make the space brighter. The area is now used to showcase JB's collection of swords and wooden antiques.

The rock garden is also adorned with a pair of wrought iron toy bicycles for a charming and whimsical look.

Vertical Garden

Homeowners Kai and Cyrus have also renovated a 40-year-old house into a cozy and comfortable home for them and their daughter, Taylor.

While the area is fairly spacious, the highlight of the space is a wall lined with shelves of potted plants. In line with their green lifestyle, the couple grows their own oregano, basil, tarragon, okra, and calamansi.

In the Pasay condo that she shares with her family, Dr. Ava has proven that a small space can still be the perfect place for a garden.

In their balcony, she has used old tarpaulins as planters to create a vertical garden. The recycled tarpaulins now hold herbs like basil, tarragon and parsley.

Gardens in Jars

Apart from creating a pocket garden in her balcony, Dr. Ava has also decided to adorn her guest room with plants. In the space, the oversized ottoman/coffee table is topped with her latest recycling project: miniature cacti in old Gerber bottles. She plans to give them away as Christmas gifts.
