Holiday Nook

Create charming holiday vignettes at home with small ornaments. You can set up your Christmas vignette in a vacant room corner, next to a window, or as a smaller assemblage on a side table.

HOW-TO:

  1. Place a small topiary or bush in the middle of the setup.
  2. Scatter a few loose Christmas ornaments on the table.
  3. Add a medium-height ornament like a ceramic or glass figure.
  4. Finish off with a table lamp or a tall vase for height.
Branch Out

Instead of throwing away old branches and twigs from your backyard, why not turn them into a Christmas tree? Place the dried branches in a vase and fill it with pebbles to keep it stable. Gather Christmas trinkets and hang them on the twigs. You can also use this tree to hang photos of your loved ones after Christmas season’s over, too!

CHRISTMAS BALL HOW-TO:

1. Cut several 2cm-wide and 7cm-long strips of paper—recycled paper is better.

2. Make small holes on both ends of each strip using a paper hole puncher.

3. Stack 11 to 12 strips of paper. Fasten the strips together by slipping a round hole paper fastener (available at National Bookstore) through each hole.

4. Bend the strips to form a half-moon curve. Fan the strips out to form a ball.

5. Tie on a thin silk ribbon to hang.

TIP: Make your own ornaments by printing vintage holiday illustrations over the Internet. Cut the illustrations and hang them using a thin lace available at the local school supplies store.

Classic Corner

If you’re the classical type who wants to dress up a bureau or buffet cabinet in time for noche buena, then go all out when decorating it. Rule of thumb: classic holiday décor in traditional colors of red, green, gold, and white go best with this type of home style, but if you don’t want it to look over-the-top or matronly, keep your palette subdued and use lots of greens.

HOW-TO:

  1. Dress up the wall behind your bureau or buffet. Hang plain green wreaths at random heights.
  2. On the uppermost level of your furniture piece, add a small topiary with minimal ornaments. You may want to balance this out on the other side of the furniture with a small table lamp or candelabra.
  3. On the lower shelf or writing surface, place a multi-tiered cake stand. Add different ornaments to this cake stand. You can also use this as your table centerpiece later on.
