When it comes to decorating our homes, we are always on the lookout for fresh ideas. We regularly read websites and magazines for tips, but sometimes inspiration can take us by surprise—it comes from people we meet or the places we go to.

One growing trend is turning container vans into small homes or even commercial spaces. A lot of people are open to do the switch because they are durable, quick to build, and relatively affordable. Taco Vengo, an up and coming restaurant along United Street in Kapitolyo, is proof that it is possible that you can turn such materials into a functional space.

Whether you're on the fence about converting your home or you simply want a more industrial feel, here are some design pointers we picked up that you can try out:

Mix and match your furniture

The combination of wood and steel gives the space an additional rustic vibe. Consider getting different chairs for your dining area but keep it within one color family to avoid clashing styles.

Don’t be afraid to leave things unfinished

When owners Teddy Manotoc and Abee Sy stumbled upon the place, the previous renter had boarded up the walls. They decided to tear everything down because they liked the idea of having a bare container van as it went with their name—vengo in Spanish means to come.

If you have open ceiling panels or unpainted walls, take it as an opportunity to experiment with a more rugged look. Add a few other accessories with metal details to keep with the theme.

Small details are important

From fruit bowls to artsy beer bottles, Sy made sure to add pieces that would make the place more cozy since most of the elements in the space were strong.

When decorating your living area or foyer, you can make a vignette out of family photos and travel mementos to make your space more personal and cozy.

Feel free to play with color

The vibrant combination of blue and neon orange helps the facade of the restaurant stand out. Planning to give your home's exterior a fresh coat of paint? Consider working with unusual combinations to brighten up your space. You can also work with similar shades  for your interiors.

RL Tip: Unsure of what hues to choose? Go with your two most favorite hues and be surprised!
