Reader Question: Which Design Style Should I Choose for Our New Home?

Combine Mediterranean, Asian, and Filipino design styles for a cozy and comfortable space

Q: We are planning to build a new house next year but we are already having problems with the motif. I can’t decide if it should be Mediterranean, Asian, or Filipino. Can your great team of designers help us plan our new home? We also hope to use all the furniture and stuff we have collected all these years. I sent you pictures of our current home with our small collection of recuerdos and paintings for refrerence. Thanks! —Dr. Miguel Sarabia

A: If you really can’t decide which style you prefer, maybe you can combine the three! Think of the essential elements that are present in all the styles:

  • modern lines
  • creative but practical use of space
  • earthy relaxed atmosphere, natural materials
  • warm color scheme

You can also incorporate aspects of each style into one single motif, which we can call “modern natural.” Modern Natural is also the name of a book by Ros Byam Shaw—which you should really take a look at to inspire you with your decorating.

For example, if you like the simplicity of modern Asian design, use a relatively neutral color scheme. You can inject Mediterranean flavor by creating an accent wall with a bright yellow or orange color. Modern furniture made from locally available materials like abaca, bamboo and rattan will give your space that natural and distinctly Filipino feel.

The beauty of collections are wasted if not displayed properly. Sometimes it’s better to display collections together in one area as opposed to having it spread out the entire place. Recessed wall niches in your living or dining room can house your most prized possessions and create an interesting focal point in your home.
