Q: I am planning to remove the wallpaper in our bedroom which has been on the wall for almost 19 years. I have been looking for a wallpaper remover but unfortunately, it seems to be out-of-stock in most hardware stores. What type and brand of  wallpaper remover is best and where can I get it? Is there an alternative to using the remover? Help!—Linda N. Tay, Novaliches, Q.C.

A: Here are the steps for removing your wallpaper:

  • Turn off the electricity. You can use rechargeable lamps to light the area.
  • Remove the vents, outlet covers, and switch plates. Cover the openings with plastic and tape.
  • Move the furniture away from the walls and cover completely with plastic.
  • Cover the bottom of the walls and the corners of the floors with plastic and tape.
  • Look for the area where the wallpaper is loose. Use a putty knife to lift the edges and pull the wallpaper away from the wall.
  • Once you have removed the top layer, apply hot water to the wall with a sponge to soften the paste
  • Once the backing is soft and easy-to-remove, scrape the backing off the wall with a metal spatula or putty knife.
