Discover how to create a Shabby Chic and country feel in your own home

Q: Your July 2013 issue remains to be my favorite—I particularly enjoyed Maggie's feminine house. Could you share tips on going for Shabby Chic, French, or country style, as well as good-quality but affordable pieces that go with that theme? I'm decorating the 50-sqm house that I acquired in Antipolo. — Michelle Torio

A: If you want to go for that style, your space should be light and airy, and filled with sturdy wooden pieces. Choose pieces that are a bit weathered, like tables or cabinets with distressed paint or vintage pieces that have a few scratches and dents.

Pair these rustic items with plush sofas covered with cotton or katsa slipcovers and throw pillows.

For color, go for muted pastels—almost gray—and lots of white.

Bring the outdoors in by decorating with plants and flowers, or opening up rooms to lanais or other outdoor areas.

You can find furniture and decor at Chrysara Nest, Not Too Shabby, Regalong Pambahay, Triboa Bay Living, and Market Square.
