Q: Can you tell me how to make a room safe for an asthmatic person? What materials would be best? —Angelo Yu

A:

  1. First, identify what triggers the asthma. Is it dust mites, mold, or pet hair? Once you’ve identified the trigger, eliminate it.
  2. Use wood or ceramic tiles—they’re easier to clean and do not collect dust and pet hair.
  3. Go for natural materials like leather and cotton for your furnishings, as heavy fabrics harbor dust mites.
  4. Choose water-based or low VOC (volatile organic compounds) paints.
  5. Buy anti-microbial bedding and wash them weekly.
  6. Air out your mattress once a month.
  7. Open windows for natural ventilation (but beware of pollen, which can trigger asthma), and avoid smoking.
  8. Lastly, don't let clutter build up and keep your house clean.
