Q: I have a spine disease and have been bedridden since July last year. Because I have limited mobility, my husband says it would be better for me to handle online jobs to take my mind off the disease and earn some money. We are currently living with my mother in her condo unit in Mandaluyong City. Though I admit that we have no extra money for a separate office space, could you suggest how to fix our unit to make it comfortable and conducive to working for someone like me?—Yaqui Llorca

A: Every space should be designed specifically for the user's activities. With a few minor changes, you can successfully convert your home into a home office. And, for the most part, you don't even have to hire outside help!

First, make a checklist of your needs. Do you need to separate the work area from your sleeping area or additional lighting? Maybe you can use a desk lamp or a floor lamp. Three-way switches will also make your life easier. Keep all these switches and outlets at a level within your reach.

Essential elements like a laptop bed desk, WiFi, and remote-controlled air-conditioning will also make your room more conducive for work. Keep books, paper, and office equipment like the telephone and printer on a working table with casters. That way you can easily move office stuff away from your bed once working hours are over. Remember, those who work at home need space to relax, too.
