Places to Explore: Pasay

There are so many things you can do, see, and enjoy in this hip and happening community

Pasay City is the closest thing Metro Manila has to a melting pot, what with its proximity to the Ninoy Aquino International Airports and southern expressways. It is also a flourishing community of villages and condominium developments, and is almost like a resort destination with its numerous luxury hotels, theaters, and leisure facilities. If you're planning to explore this part of the city, better keep a copy of this list:

Pasay is the choice for hotels because of the airports and the location of international convention centers like the SMX at Mall of Asia Complex and the World Trade Center. Solaire, Resorts World Manila, City of Dreams and newest player Conrad Hotel are for luxurious staycations and casino weekends. Catch international plays and musicals at The Newport Performing Arts Theater at Resorts World. Bring the kiddos to DreamPlay at City of Dreams, an interactive activity center; or to Star City—an amusement park for nostalgia’s sake. Do not miss the art exhibits, local plays, and Ballet Philippines performances at the Cultural Center of the Philippines in the CCP Complex. The building is a perfect example of Brutalist architecture by National Artist Leandro Locsin.

The Mall of Asia complex offers countless food choices. There are many buffets at the hotels, but the Spiral buffet at The Hotel Sofitel in the CCP Complex is the most famous. Harbor Square, also at the CCP Complex, is technically in Manila, but don’t miss it as its restaurants offer lovely views of Manila Bay. There are several dampa paluto (cook-to-order) seafood restaurants along Seaside of Macapagal Ave.,  and the nicely designed UCC Clockwork and other quiet restaurants along Bluebay Walk, Metropark.

There’s the humongous Mall of Asia, but if you want something more upscale, high-tail it to the glitzy S Maison luxury mall at the Conrad Hotel, with stores like Bang & Olufsen, Cole Haan, Zero Halliburton, and more. Another high-end mall is Newport Mall at Resorts World, with brands like Swarovski and Tudor lining the marble halls. For an artsy vibe, visit 2680 FB Harrison—a compound of 1940s houses that were refitted to become designer furniture store a11, the Avellana Art Gallery, and cozy Henry Hotel. Meanwhile, there’s bargain hunter’s heaven Baclaran with its various sidewalk vendors for affordable houseware and clothing. While you’re there, pray a novena to the Mother of Perpetual Help at the Baclaran Church.

The new Singapore School Manila along Roxas Blvd. has a Singaporean curriculum for kindergarten to secondary students. The Philippine State College of Aeronautics, along with other aeronautics schools, are conveniently located near the airports. Manila Tytana College along Macapagal Ave. offers nursing courses. San Juan de Dios Hospital is the main medical center in the area, though Manila Doctors Hospital along United Nations Avenue is a short trip away.
