A beautiful sitting area outdoors is an important feature in every home. Aside from being a space for relaxation and solace, it serves as an extension of your living and dining areas when entertaining guests. To make sure your terrace leaves a lasting impression on your friends and family, here are a few ideas to help you keep it neat and tidy:

1. Find a way to add extra storage.

To keep your backyard free of stray toys, magazines, and gardening tools, make sure you stock up on woven bins where you can store all your essentials. Better yet, solve two problems (lack of seating and storage) at once by getting hollow benches that can double as cabinets.

RL Tip: Add custom cushions to make standard furniture look extra stylish.

2. Set up a makeshift bar.

Nothing beats dining al fresco and enjoying a couple of drinks—especially in the summer. Avoid the mess in the kitchen or dining area by putting up an extra surface for liquor and glasses. You can use basic shelf brackets or a transforming table so it can be folded and kept when it's not in use.

3. Lock up your garbage to avoid odors.

In most homes, the recycling system is placed in the backyard to keep the foyer clean. To keep your lanai from smelling funky, invest in trash can latches to contain odors. This also prevents your pets and stray critters from invading your recycle bin.

4. Set up a potting station.

If you have a green corner, make sure to assign a specific spot where you can make a mess to keep your entertainment area clear of dirt and mud. Keep your bags of extra soil and fertilizer in storage or transfer them in old jars to keep the space aesthetically pleasing.

5. Find a spot for seasonal knickknacks.

For things you don't use daily like citronella candles (works as a great mosquito repellent!), throws (for cold nights) and extra pillows, consider giving them a place to rest by getting industrial shelving. Pick out something made from stainless steel to keep your storage weather-proof.
