On Our Wishlist: An Ikea Store in the Philippines
The Asian franchisee of the world's largest furniture retailer plans to open stores in our country soon
With the opening of stores like Habitat, Crate & Barrel, and West Elm, to name a few—we can't help but wonder, when would IKEA finally open its doors in the Philippines?
During a visit to the country a couple of years back to discuss possible investment opportunities, Christian Rojkjaer, managing director at Ikano Retail Asia mentioned that the Philippine market is more than ready for the furniture giant. Retail Asia owns the IKEA franchise in Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand.

For plans to push through, Ikano is still waiting for approval from the Swedish brand for the the franchising rights for the Philippine market. Once approved, Filipino homeowners will have access to the wide array of IKEA products.

While waiting for the approval, there's also a concern as to where to put up the stores. There's an urgent need for big spaces as IKEA stores measure around 40,000sqm each.
Aside from opening three stores in Manila, there will also be an assessment to determine if other branches will be built outside the country's capital.
As we wait for the official announcement if these plans will push through, we can't help but dream about how each store will look like and what treasures could be found inside! To give you an idea, here are some of the items that you can see once you step inside the one-stop-store:
- Upholstered furniture
- Dining tables and chairs
- Beds, bed covers, pillows, and cushions
- Garden furniture
- Kitchen items
- Curtains and soft furnishings
