Must-See: The River Den—An Off-Grid, Floating Home

There is more than enough room to move about and mingle with guests in this tiny house

There are off-grid houses, you have your mobile homes and then there are floating tiny havens. Coming from a long line of log drivers, Bonnie from Wakefield, Québec in Canada has always envisioned herself living near the water. Her abode, full of character and charm, is fondly called The River Den as it paints the perfect picture of the laid-back lifestyle.

Aside from the fact that it is built on several pontoons to provide floatation and stabilty, her unconventional pad packs everything you might find in a traditional house. It has custom windows, aluminum frames, grill flooring (it allows heat to rise from the level and light to travel down the home) and handmade furniture that Bonnie takes pride in building herself with the help of her friend Denis Tremblay.

It is also equipped with an antique fireplace, a lofted bed, a composting toilet, heated showers and a deep cycle marine battery that provides electricity. One of the windows in the loft also opens up to a gorgeous rooftop patio with a cedar deck, too! Today, the boat is docked on the shore of Gatineau River where there are accessible restaurants and shops right across the street, but it has a working engine and gas motor that will let Bonnie take her home wherever she decides to live next.
