Moving In Together: Merging His and Her Styles

Build a starter home filled with the things that you both love

Every homeowner has his or her own preferences when it comes to color, furniture, and decor. If you've recently acquired a bachelor or bachelorette pad, we're sure that you are having the time of your life choosing furniture, accessories, and other accents.

But what happens if you've just moved in with your better half? If he likes neutrals and you like bold colors, what would be the next step? Since you want your home to be a reflection of your personalities, you need to collaborate and combine your design aesthetics. Here are a couple of tips that may just help you.

Share tasks

As you decorate your home, it’s essential that you identify each other's strengths and take on roles that can best maximize these. If your significant other has a knack for choosing materials for the kitchen and other areas of the house, then let him or her take care of that aspect. You should also bank on the things that you are good at! If you're good at mixing and matching patterns and colors, then be in charge of tasks involving this skill. Just remember to ask for inputs every now and then.

Create your own personal spaces

Having a "secret" personal area allows you to spend some quality "me" time. If the space allows, you can turn a spare room into a man cave for the man of the house. If you're into crafts and reading, you can transform an extra room or unused corner into a reading and crafts nook.

RL Tip: You might want to consider having two lavatories in the bathroom to save on time—especially in the morning when you are getting ready for work.

Craft your own mood board

Before you go furniture shopping, it’s advisable to put together a vision board that contains paint swatches and layout pegs for the different areas of the house. Do you research and visit websites and blogs. Consider the mood board as a tag team project that you can work on together.

RL Tip: Identify the items that you both like and consider it as part of the important must-haves for your space.
