Painting your walls isn't as easy as choosing your favorite colors then grabbing a paint brush. It involves a tedious process of inspecting the finish of your walls so you can choose the correct type of paint and making sure that the surface is clean to ensure a quality paint job.

If you are ready to paint your space on your own, it's important that you have the basic knowledge and tools. You may want to get started with these helpful tips.

Invest in high-quality white base

Since white is considered the most integral element of paint, choosing a premium white base is crucial in achieving a consistent surface that provides good coverage. If you have a limited budget, you may want to scrimp on tinting colors instead.

Choose the tinting colors

When you visit the hardware store, you may want to go for basic hues first. If you prefer lighter shades, you can mix it with white. When mixed with white, Raw Sienna turns into cream while Thalo blue can make beige look a bit more like mocha.

RL Tip: Don't hesitate to ask a professional for tips when it comes to pairing colors. You can also ask the store attendants for advice.

Mix a sample

Fill the half of a small container about the size of a quart of paint with white base. Fill the container with your choice of tinting colors. Gradually add it while stirring the mixture using a long one-inch-thick stick. Keep on pouring and stirring until the desired shade is achieved.

Test the mix

Before painting your walls, apply a blob on any surface so you can see the final shade. If you're not in a hurry, you may want to observe the test surface first to see how the color will evolve. Your chosen paint may not deliver the vibe that you want to achieve.

Apply the paint

Once you’ve achieved your desired shade, mix a batch that is good enough to cover your room or area to be painted.
