Kids' Furniture That Are Fun and Small-Space-Friendly

When we talk about readily available children’s furniture, brightly colored plastic or wooden pieces emblazoned with cartoon characters come to mind. Rarely do we see children’s furnishings that have a clean-lined aesthetic in simple colors, and these usually have prohibitive prices.

Interior designer Catherine Cena-Yambao saw the need for stylish kids’ furniture for modern homes. “Ever since I gave birth to my daughter, I have been looking for mid-end furniture for kids that would look nice for [her] room and the general design of our house,” Catherine relates. “I found a few pieces, but found a lack of readily available designs here in Manila and the Philippines in general. I realized that I could just design the pieces myself.”

It all started with Zoey

We first saw Catherine’s penchant for designing stylish and cool children’s rooms and nurseries in her own home, as seen here in the photos of her daughter Zoey’s room. “Zoey is my inspiration for Warble, of course,” she says. “I really wanted to have cute and functional furniture for her room, and from that, this idea sprung. After all, need is the mother of invention.”

Instead of going for pink, Catherine went for a white-black-and-gray color palette, which would still look appropriate even when Zoey grows up. Catherine used graphic black-and-white wallpaper, installed loads of storage units for toys and clothes, and added mid-century-style kids’ furniture and a teepee (you can get one from Pottly n’ Tubby).

The designer eventually created Warble, her own line of children’s furniture, which she sells online and at the Power Plant Mall in Rockwell. According to Catherine, Warble means: "’[A bird] singing softly and with a succession of constantly changing notes.’ My personal interior design brand’s logo is actually a bird, and since this is like my baby line, the logo is a baby bird in its half shell.”

Fun forms with a modern aesthetic

“The furniture styles are part Scandinavian, part whimsical, part contemporary style,” Catherine explains. “All the pieces are made of solid pinewood, in non-toxic paint, and [with] soft-close hinges.” Warble furniture pieces are clean-lined, in soothing, trendy pastels like blush, pistachio, and natural wood finish, which go well in most contemporary homes.

Functional play with storage

Warble currently has two collections: the Adventure collection (great for boys) and the Dollhouse collection (for girls, though go ahead and mix it up!). The pieces were designed to be functional, and to look like toys at the same time.

“The Adventure collection is based on a mountain road trip (hence the Jeep table set, the mountain shelf and the tree hanging shelf). I actually grew up in Baguio so this was part of the inspiration. The Dollhouse collection sprung from the fact that my little girl loves playing with small figure toys. I thought she would love to play with those in a dollhouse…and why not a dollhouse table, chair and shelf?”

All the pieces double as storage—the jeep-desk’s “hood” opens up to reveal a place to stash school supplies, and a dollhouse seat opens up to toy storage. The shapes are simple, and can easily be stashed in a corner when not in use, making it great for small spaces and condos.
