Keep Kids And Pets Away From Poisonous Houseplants With This Hack

If you don't have a high shelf to keep your planters out of reach, this two-ingredient spray is a great alternative

Every homeowner knows that adding plants at home is always a good idea. They bring color, beauty, and life to our living spaces—not to mention, they clean the air and boost the energy of a room, too. However, there is one caveat—some powerful houseplants should be grown with extra caution because they can be poisonous, especially to curious kids and pets who have a tendency to sample everything they can get their hands (or paws!) on.

Don't worry, you can always turn to a repellent spray that uses nothing but tap water and your favorite essential oil! Since little ones and furry friends are more sensitive to smells than we are, they are less likely to play with things that have a strong scent. As a bonus, it will leave your entire house smelling like a spa.

Excited to try it? Check out the step-by-step guide below:

What you need:

  • Spray bottle
  • Your essential oil of choice
  • Water

How-to:

  • In your spray bottle, pour 3/4 parts water with 15 drops of your chosen essential oil. This ratio helps keep the scent strong but the solution mild enough not to ruin the leaves of your plant.
  • Shake well before use. Spray solution on the leaves of your plant and into the soil.

RL Tip: Eucalyptus, mint, lavender, lemongrass and lavender work best—just choose the one you don't mind smelling 24/7.
