Jumpstart Your Day: 4 Ways to Add Extra Storage in a Small Space

Turn awkward corners into instant storage spots

Cleaning a small unit is fairly easy—given the small floor area, it's much easier to sweep the floor, wipe the surfaces and windows, remove dust from decor and furniture pieces. The challenge faced by most homeowners has always been storage. Where should the shoes go? How can you display your collections and keep the supplies?

This need not be a cause of worry as you can look around the house and see where you can add storage solutions! Consider installing shelves or turning nooks into secret cabinets. Be inspired by this modern 111sqm unit designed by interior designers Ann Katherine Dee-Santiago and Mark Bryan See.

Opt for multipurpose pieces

You've probably read it a thousand times but the easiest would be to choose pieces that can serve dual purposes such as ottomans and baskets. If you have a small bathroom, you may install mirrors that have secret cabinets. For this unit, Ann and Mark added mirrors that are operable and serve as hidden doors for toiletries.

Turn awkward corners into storage spots

The home office in the unit sports an irregular shape. “When we encounter irregularly-shaped units, we normally just follow the layout of the built-ins or the furniture pieces’ orientation relative to the walls. That way, no space is wasted, and if in case there will be awkward spaces, we make use of those and build something to make them functional,” shares Ann.

If you also have an awkward niche at home, you may want to consider turning it into a secret cabinet for extra pantry supplies or installing wall-mounted shelves for your decor pieces and collections.

Make built-in storage part of the design element

A recessed space can be transformed into a floating cabinet that you can use in storing shoes, extra pillows, and other home items. For this condo, the designers treated the doors in white glass panels to add texture and to make it part of the design element.

Create ledges for additional storage or display spots

Trouble displaying all those family photos and travel souvenirs? Install open shelves that can hold your favorite pieces and a couple of potted plants! If you want something similar to the ledge shown in the photo, you may ask your trusted carpenter for his expertise and help.
