If you've lived in the Philippines for a while, you probably know that the rainy season can last for months on end. While it can be the perfect weather for long weekends and sleeping in, unfortunately, this kind of rainy weather can be destructive for the exteriors of the home—especially the roof. Keep yours in mint condition by ticking off these maintenance must-dos from your list:

  • Use a garden hose to flush out the gutters. To clean downspouts, turn the hose on full-blast and thread it into the drain opening.
  • Check the downspout for leaks. Depending on the level of damage, the repair can be as simple as applying a rubber sealant or it might involve replacement of the dented area.
  • Make sure to stand on the ladder and never to step on the gutters! It is highly-likely that you’ll damage it and cause breakage leading to leaks.

  • Inspect the roof covering for decayed, damaged, cracked or blistered areas. It's easier to prevent than repair holes.
  • Search for water pooling and for water stains, as these indicate and uneven surface and the presence of leaks.
  • Prune overhanging tree branches that can fall and cause roof damage.
  • Periodically remove rooftop debris. Try doing it every other month if you live somewhere dusty and once every three months if you live far from the city.
