In the past year, minimalism has been all the rage and we’re not surprised to see this trend-turned-lifestyle soldier on to 2017. We’ve seen tiny homes, countless organizing hacks and most important of all—we learned about the KonMari method from The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.

With the success of the first book and the release of Spark Joy, we're guessing that most of you are quite far along the journey (if not, you can start here!). Aside from decluttering clothes and paper, perhaps one of the highlights of this method is the category of komono, which is what the Japanese call miscellany. It covers a range of things you own, from CDs and DVDs to sewing kits and what we're focusing on today: makeup and skin care.

Marie Kondo recommends:

  • Go through all your drawers, bags, clothing pockets and shelves—take every makeup or skin care product you can find around your house and place it all on the floor.
  • Read the labels and immediately get rid of anything that is already past the sell-by and used-by date.
  • Hold each item in your hand and ask the question: Does this add value to my life? If the answer is yes, set it aside. If the answer is no, add it to the purge pile.
  • Organize everything back to your drawers or vanity by how often you use them.

RL Tip: Don't know which ones to keep or throw away? Check out our simple chart below:

If you need extra motivation, we found a video tutorial that can help and inspire you! YouTuber, muchelleb, not only shows us how she does it, she shares tips on how to let go of unused items, too.

Time for you to try it with your vanity! Feel free to send us photos of your makeup corner once you've done the technique. We'd love to see your progress.
