There are three possible reasons why more and more homeowners are choosing the industrial style for their spaces. One, it's very easy to maintain; two, it's easy to choose pieces that can go well with the theme, and lastly, it's very "in" and trendy.

One of the common elements seen in industrial homes is concrete. "Concrete is an efficient material, especially for high-impact areas. It’s cheaper, but you can expect more reflective sound and light," shares contractor and co-owner of IDeal Interior Design Services. Whether you're going for a unique industrial style or you simply want to work on your walls, here are important tips to keep in mind:

Prepare the area

Before you begin painting, make sure that the surface is free from dirt, grease, and oil as these may affect the adhesion of paint. If the surface has been previously painted on, remove the paint completely.

Don't forget to seal it

You don’t want water seeping into the porous concrete, so you need to seal the surface before painting it. It’s best to go to a paint center and ask for a recommendation on the type of sealer you can use. "Sealers and waxes provide durability to a concrete finish," Jorge explains.

Paint it properly

The primer smoothens the surfaces and fills the pores of the concrete (make sure the primer works with the sealer.). Opt for elastomeric paint–apply one coat and wait for it to dry before adding more coatings. "Skimcoats and light leveling toppings can be applied for a polished concrete finish," the contractor shares.
