Air-conditioning units, while very functional, just aren't pleasing to the eyes. It can take away from the beauty of your home—especially when you own tower-types or cooling fans. To keep them from being too distracting, here's how to cleverly conceal those unsightly cooling agents in your home.

1. Window-type: Put them in "cages"

Consider having cages built—actually wooden slated screens—for taller air-conditioners. The diagonal slats make the cages look less like a prison cell without obstructing the airflow.

2. Split-type: Build shelves around it

If you can't hide it, use it. Put up horizontal shelves around the AC. You can also add a slatted sliding door in front of the unit to effectively disguise it.

3. Tower: Use a stand-alone divider

When the room is cool enough, place an accordion divider in front of the tower AC. Since the AC unit will probably be in a corner or against the wall, the divider won't be in the way, either.

4. Portable AC: Indoor plants

Portable AC units are not that big, so it will be easy to hide them behind indoor plants, say, potted palms or ficus.
