When it comes to buying anything for the home, we usually ask two important questions: Is it pretty? and Is it affordable? While we'd love to keep costs low, we shouldn't sacrifice quality. It's always best to visit different stores and take note of the price points.

If you're thinking of buying a new dining table, you need to consider the purposes that it can serve. Whether you’re looking for a square four-seater or a long eight-seater, a good quality dining table can also be used as a study or worktable for family members. Interior designer Ayet San Jose-Aniag shares three practical tips that can help you choose the perfect piece:

Check the material

Just like sofas, a dining table made of solid wood is durable. “Or if you are more on the modern side, go for glass, pero dapat safe naman din so dapat tempered glass,” says Ayet. A dining table made of kiln-dried wood is also an excellent choice “kasi it won’t warp because moisture has been removed from the wood.”

Avoid medium-density fiber boards and similar materials

“Because it’s usually compressed wood and paper material, it can easily absorb moisture. Kung baga, disposable table siya, that’s why it is super cheap,” says Ayet. She also advises against buying tables made of Malaysian rubberwood, as these are not of good quality.

Maintain your table

As with any other furniture, you need to keep the table in tip-top shape by giving it the proper cleaning it deserves. “Clean up immediately if there’s a spill para hindi pumapasok yung moisture,” says the designer.
