4 Steps to Choosing the Best Flooring for Your Space
Ensure quality and durability with the help of these tips
When choosing floors for your new home, do you simply go with what's beautiful? Keep in mind that when it comes to finalizing the materials for your space, you need to be smart and practical.
Interior designer Jean Suzanne Sy shares a few reminders on how to pick the best material for your floors:
Opt for a durable material
Think about the function of the space. Is it a high traffic area or is it prone to spills and scratches? Considering these questions can help you choose the best durable material in the market. Doing so will also ensure you that the material can stand the test of time.
Assess who will use it
“For homes with little kids, consider using ceramic tiles for easy cleaning. Another option would be bamboo floorings, because it is also durable and eco-friendly,” shares Jean.

Consider your budget
When it comes to renovating your home, you need to be realistic when it comes to setting your budget. If you want a certain material but it’s above your price range, you may opt to get a similar but cheaper option. Vinyl flooring is a great budget-friendly alternative that you can use for your home. It's a great choice for kitchen floors as it's waterproof and virtually maintenance-free. It comes in planks, tiles, and sheets, that can be used for any high-traffic area at home.
RL Tip: “Consider the thickness of the vinyl tile, before anything else. The best size is 3mm because it usually lasts longer and doesn't fade easily," suggests Jean.
Sync your style
Aside from durability, you also need to consider if your chosen material complements the style of your space. If you’re going for a rustic vibe in the kitchen, Jean suggests using ceramic wood tiles. These tiles will give a stylish finish to your space and at the same time keep your floors scratch-free.
