Whether it’s fashion, food, or interior design—most of us, if not everyone, are fascinated by all things Scandinavian. We’re always ready to jump on whatever trend they bring and that includes the hygge way of life.

Hygge (pronounced HOO-gah), simply put, is the Danish word for cozy. Helen Russell, author of “The Year of Living Danishly,” defines it as “taking pleasure in the presence of gentle, soothing things,” like a thick throw, knitted socks or even a slice of cake. In a way, it is the daily pursuit of happiness and finding delight in the little things to help you be in a better mood all the time.

Interested to incorporate a bit of hygge into your home? Here's how:

1. Invest in candles.

Candles are a staple in every Scandinavian home—whether scented or otherwise as the warmth of candlelight can transform a minimalist space into an inviting nook. Feel free to match the scent with the season or pick ones that remind you of your fondest memories.

2. Upgrade your loungewear.

Comfort isn't just about where you're staying, it's about what you're wearing, too. Choose loose tops and onesies over wearing your errand clothes at home—these clothing pieces will help you get comfy and shake off long days at work or school.

RL Tip: Having guests over? Set out a few extra pairs of fuzzy slippers and big blankets to keep them extra comfortable.

3. Don’t overdecorate.

Hygge is not about extravagance, but indulgence. Don't go the extra mile to impress your guests, try creating a laid-back space where they can feel right at home the moment they step in. Add in touches of nature and a lot of pillows, too.

4. Surround yourself with things that make you happy.

Hygge is about the simple things that never fail to make you smile—stock up on your favorite coffee or hot cocoa, treat yourself to a luxurious bubble bath, display your favorite book covers or put up family photos on your accent wall.
