Furnishing Your First Home: 5 Pieces to Buy Now
Once you've moved into your new home, what pieces do you buy first? Be guided by this checklist
Moving into a new home or starting a new life in your own personal pad can be daunting, especially when you're faced with the task of filling it with furniture and decor. What do you buy first? Do you simply get the first piece that caught your attention? Do you purchase a piece just because it's cute and charming?
"Furnishing your first home is a matter of budgeting and prioritizing your needs," shares interior designer Peaches de Guzman-Grey. If you're currently going through this milestone of furnishing your first home, here are five pieces that you should prioritize.
Opt for a sturdy bed that can last for a long time. Your bed should be on top of the list as this is where you can relax after a long day at work.
"Assess your space if you need a twin, queen, or a king size bed," Peaches says. If you are sharing the space with your spouse, you may opt for a queen size bed. However, if you are also working on a room for your kids, consider getting a bunk bed to save on space.

An excellent sofa with a sturdy base can last a lifetime! "Before buying one, be sure to check the type of fabric, foam, and framing. Do your research and assess the pros and cons of the piece," Peaches explains.
When choosing a sofa, opt for a piece that reflects your lifestyle. If you live in a studio unit and your friends love to come over, having a sofa bed will surely come in handy as it can serve as a makeshift bed for sleepovers.
Choosing multipurpose pieces for your space? Here are tips to consider.
For small spaces, it's advisable to pick multipurpose pieces to maximize the area. Save on space by choosing a table that can be used for eating and working. There are also tables that can be folded when not in use.

Investing on good lighting fixtures can make your space look and feel more comfortable! Purchase high-quality light bulbs and be sure to screw them properly as loose connections may cause overheating.
If your budget permits, you may also purchase accent lights to illuminate hallways.

"Storage is one of the most important items that you need to prioritize. As much as possible, pick pieces that may also double as your accent piece. It is also efficient to purchase furniture with built-in storage—like a bed with drawers, or an ottoman that moonlights as storage," Peaches suggests.
You can use these different pieces to store the items and essentials that you will acquire over time.
