Unlike most indoor plants, ferns are relatively easy to grow and take care of. However, the slightest switch in temperature can drastically change its appearance which is what you need to watch out for—after all, no one wants a dry and drab garden, right? To help you maintain lush, green fronds all-year round, here are a few important tips to keep in mind:

DO keep the soil moist, but not soggy.

Don’t forget to water your fern twice or thrice a week during the summer and reduce it to at least four times a month for colder weather. You can also invest in sheet moss that you can layer with the soil to keep your plant well-hydrated 24/7.

DO trim off brown leaves.

Drying leaves don’t contribute anything to the growth of your fern. Make sure your plant is happy and healthy by snipping off any decaying parts on the tip of the leaves—doing this once a month usually does the trick.

DON’T keep them near vents and fans.

Humidity is the mortal enemy of ferns. Make it a point to keep your planters away from vents, fans, and AC units to prevent them from drying out.

DON’T use dry fertilizer.

Since ferns need moisture to survive, it does not respond well to heavy plant food. Instead, feed it with diluted liquid fertilizer monthly for tall and strong leaves.

DO repot when the roots are filling the pot.

Repotting ferns usually kills the plant—however, if you really need to put them in a new home, make sure they have roots growing into the planter to make sure they are mature enough. Don’t forget to cut off damaged fronds to encourage new growth.
