Herbs are always a fun addition to any home. Believe it or not, whether you live in the suburbs or a high-rise unit in the city, growing them can be easy when you have the basics down pat. To help you harvest a top-notch bunch all-year round, here are some guidelines you can follow:

DO plant similar herbs together. There are certain herbs that grow better if you put them beside each other—for example herbs like basil, parsley, and cilantro need more water compared to rosemary, oregano, and thyme which grow better in dry soil.

DON’T overwater. Herbs, in general, don’t grow well in moist soil. Follow the rule of watering it every other day in the summer and once a week in the colder months.

DO start from scratch. If you’re new to gardening, it’s better to start with seedlings rather than repotting plants to make sure it grows healthy.

DO make sure that your patch gets the right amount of sun. It’s important to note that all herbs love sunlight. Make sure to leave them in a spot at home where they can be exposed to at least five hours of sunlight per day.

DON’T use sandy soil. An old and gummy base is a threat to fresh produce. Starting with healthy soil will help you build a solid foundation for your chosen herbs.
