Decorating your first home can give you a thrill of excitement. From choosing furnishings to picking out the right decor pieces—it can be very liberating to decorate the space according to your style and needs. To help you create a pretty and functional home, here are dos and don'ts that you need to take note of.

DO pick dual-purpose furniture

“Using furniture pieces that double as storage compartments is a smart strategy for small spaces,” shares architect Ivy Tablante-Darilag. Some of the multipurpose pieces that you can consider for your space include: bed with storage, sofa beds, and ottomans. You may also want to invest in furniture that you can pass down to your kids like an antique table or a sturdy chair.

DO ask for hand-me-down furniture from relatives

You don't necessarily have to buy all of your furniture at once. You can live comfortably with just the basics. You may even drop by your parents' home or ancestral house to see if there are pieces that you can repurpose! “While you are saving for your ideal furniture set, hand-me-downs can serve its purpose in your new condo unit while you're starting up,” shares interior designer Carmen Lim-Regala.

DO invest in essential and basic pieces

Always start with the basics! Before planning the overall style of your bedroom or kitchen, think about the furniture and appliances needed first. Research and read up on the sizes of beds and if you're looking for appliances, be on the lookout for affordable yet high-quality products.

DON'T buy on impulse

Some of us cannot resist those bold letters announcing big sales and discounts. Don't decide on aesthetics alone, too! Always ask yourself these important questions—Where can I use this? Where will I place it? Do I really need this at home? You need to make sure that it has a purpose and that you can maximize it. You don't want to buy an appliance that will only end up as a decor piece for the home.

DON'T forget to prioritize storage

Your small home will look cluttered if you fill it with all the possible appliances and furniture pieces. Be creative and turn nooks and crannies into storage options. If you have stairs at home, you may want to convert the space under it into a nook or storage station for shoes and other essentials. Spruce up an empty wall by considering wall-mounted shelves for books and decor.

DON'T overlook your layout

Work on an efficient layout by studying how you can best arrange the furniture and how you can segregate the areas without making the space look cramped and cluttered.
