To bathtub or not to bathtub—that is the question. Some may think that it's a form of luxury, but why would you shy away from getting one for your bathroom? You had a long day and nothing beats the thought of a relaxing bath, some scented candles, and soothing music to calm your nerves. It’s always the image of a bubble bath with the occasional champagne glass that sells the idea of a bathtub in the bathroom.

Before you run to the nearest depot to select a grade-A porcelain, claw foot bathtub that you’ve always dreamed of, you need to assess if it is a necessity or just a passing fancy. Here are a few important things to consider:

Space and Ergonomics

A bathtub may come in handy—as part of relaxation and water therapy. You can clean your whole body without doing too much movement so there's less strain. According to interior designer Rochelle Granali, it's also ideal for elders and people undergoing physical therapy. If you have kids and pets at home, bath time will surely be easier if you have a bathtub.

Since it's a luxurious addition to the bathroom, a bathtub can increase the market value of your home, too.

Upkeep and Maintenance

Given our busy schedules and active lifestyles, we prefer quick showers and easy routines. However, if you have the luxury of time, floor space, and extra budget. Do your research and invest in a piece. You also need to consider the maintenance of your bathtub if you want to keep and use it for a long time.

“Bathtubs require more water and may require that you install a bigger hot water tank. Compared to a shower, bathtubs are a lot more expensive to install and generally require more for upkeep,” says architect Winona Aquino.

Style and Function

Bathtubs come in different sizes, shapes, and styles—and with the right measurements, you can pick one that can fit in your bathroom. Freestanding bathtubs can be installed anywhere in your private space to serve as a focal point. There are also different options available—from air baths, whirlpools, and walk-in baths that are all comfortable to use and have different features.

Once you've decided to get a bathtub, you can enjoy a complete experience by purchasing bath gels and bath salts, to name a few.
