DIY: Transform Your Throw Pillows

Create a unique piece and learn a couple of hints from designer Beam Mariano

Give Beam some felt fabric and she can surely come up with sweet, functional pieces in no time. Her shop Artwine (www.shopartwine.com) is proof of her love affair with felt. Beam says, “I knew I wanted to make a floral design for the pillows because I want to show how versatile felt cloth is. It’s a fabric I use in my handmade bridal line, Celebrate Artwine, because it’s sturdy enough to make 3D petals yet soft enough to be a pillow cover.” The felt flowers add a multi-dimensional and textural effect to the pillows, and even if sat or leaned on, these everlasting blooms won’t get crushed.

Budget and Materials

Budget: P1,500

Materials:

  • Store-bought pillows
  • Fillers (for pillows)
  • Felt cloth
  • Beads
  • Needle and thread
  • Tailor’s chalk
  • Pins
  • Cardboard
Do it:

White pillow with different flower designs.

1. Add more filler to the old pillow to make them fluffy again.
2. Draw different kinds of flower petal patterns on a cardboard for your template.

Red pillow with red and pink flowers.

3. Draw several petals on your felt cloth with tailor’s chalk and carefully cut out the shapes using your outline as guide.
4. Position the felt petals onto your blank pillow cover as desired, and secure them in place with pins.

Blue pillow with blue and white flowers.

5. When you’re happy with the arrangement, hand-stitch each petal starting from the base up to the tip. (For bigger, more complex flower patterns, start with the outermost petals and insert more flowers inward.)

*You may add sparkle to your pillow cover by stitching a few beads at the center of some of the flowers.
