Many homeowners now use chalkboard paint for their walls, furniture, and decor. This type of paint creates surfaces for writing messages, taking down notes, and making grocery lists.

If you love chalkboard paint as much as we do, you can also use it to recycle old pieces. For this particular project, we have decided to update old chairs and a study table.

DIY project by Isaac Corotan.

Materials:

  • Old table and chairs
  • Chalkboard paint (ready-made paint available in art supply stores)
  • Spray paint
  • White primer paint
  • Paintbrush/ rollers
  • Sandpaper
  • Old newspaper

RL Tip: If you can’t find chalkboard paint, you can make your own! Simply mix 3/4 cup satin latex with 2 tablespoons of white grout. Stir well.

How-to:

  1. Cover your work area with old newspaper sheets to avoid dust and paint stains on the floor.
  2. Sand down chairs and tables until smooth and free of paint or varnish. Then wipe with a clean rug.
  3. Paint primer over the sanded furniture so that the colored spray paint can adhere better. Let it dry completely.
  4. Spray paint chairs and table legs with desired paint color. Remember to spray at least eight inches from the surface. Apply multiple coats and allow drying time in between.
  5. Once the tabletop surface is completely dry, paint it with chalkboard paint.
