Everyone loves an intricate glass candle holder or a quirky terrarium to add to their display. When done right, these little details can add a lot of character to any space.

More recently, painted versions of these old classics have been popping up here and there. Aside from using it as decor at home, it can also serve as centerpieces for parties or as souvenirs. If you're looking for an activity to help you unwind this weekend, why not give this project a try by following this step-by-step tutorial:

What you need:

  • Mode Podge or Elmer's Glue
  • Paint brushes
  • Food coloring or Procion dyes

How-to:

  • Prepare 1 teaspoon of Mod Podge or glue, 3 to 5 drops of preferred coloring, and 1 teaspoon of water in a small bowl.
  • Stir everything together slowly with the end of the paint brush. It should be somewhat thick but still runny—add more coloring or glue depending on the ratio of your mixture.

  • Using even strokes, paint your jar from top to bottom following a single direction. Be careful not to go over it too much to keep the glue from clumping together.
  • Leave the bottle to dry overnight. If you want to expedite the drying time, place it in the microwave for 30-40 seconds on low temperature.

RL Tip: For a vintage-inspired finish, add an extra coat to the neck and bottom of the jar to give it more dimension.
