DIY: Budget-Friendly Origami Cranes for your Home

Brighten up any plain and boring space with these colorful and easy-to-make paper birds

Looking for something fun to do with family and friends, especially with the kids? You can dabble in origami!

Origami is the art of folding paper to make interesting paper sculptures. Apart from keeping you busy and entertained for hours on end, working with paper will also leave you with pieces that you can use to decorate your home.

For this project, DIY enthusiast Sheena Ira Tan-Padrigao made colorful paper cranes that you can hang on the ceiling, mount on the wall, or turn into a mobile for the nursery. Let the step-by-step below guide you.

Materials:
  • Origami paper or colored paper squares
  • Nylon string or used strings
  • Scotch tape
  • Scissors

RL Tip: Save money and be kind to the environment by recycling old paper and used strings lying around your home.

How-to:
  • Fold the paper in half to make a rectangle. Always press down firmly so each fold makes a visible crease.
  • Unfold paper and fold again the other way to make another rectangle.
  • Unfold again. Now, fold the paper in half to make a triangle.
  • Unfold and fold again the other way to make another triangle. You should end up with a "+" and an "X" atop each other. 
  • Tuck in the sides of the triangle to make a diamond.
  • Lay the diamond-shaped paper on the table with the open ends facing you.
  • Fold over the two bottom sides of the diamond towards the vertical crease on the middle of the paper.
  • Your paper should look like a thin diamond on a fat diamond.
  • Fold over the little triangle on the top.
  • Unfold all three folds you made. Lift up the flap.
  • Fold down following the crease guides. 
  • Now, you have a thin and lengthy diamond.
  • Turn over the paper and repeat the steps to make another thin diamond.
  • Again, lay the diamond-shaped paper on the table with the open ends facing you.
  • Fold over the two bottom sides of the diamond towards the vertical crease on the middle of the paper.
  • Fold over the little triangle on the top.
  • Unfold all three folds you made. Lift up the flap.
  • Fold down following the crease guides. 
  • You should have another thin and lengthy diamond.
  • Lay the diamond-shaped paper on the table. The flaps that have a cut through the middle should be facing you.
  • Fold over the two bottom sides of the diamond towards the vertical line in the middle.
  • Turn over the paper.
  • Fold over the two bottom sides of the diamond towards the vertical line in the middle.
  • One flap will be the crane's neck, the other flap will be its tail.
  • The two closed flaps on the other end will be its wings.
  • Fold the two thin flaps up.
  • Now, using the creases as guides, fold in the thin flaps between the front and back bigger flaps.
  • To make the head, fold in the tip of one flap.
  • Now, fold the two top flaps to create the wings.
  • Let go of the fold and the wings should extend sideways.
  • You can decorate with the paper cranes already! You can use tape to attach different lengths of nylon string or any used string.
  • Attach the strings directly to your ceiling or wall. You can even hang them from a rod to create a mobile for your nursery.
