DIY: An Old Skirt turned into a Pillowcase

Recycle old clothes into home must-haves

Photography: Vincent Coscolluela

Have you recently cleaned out your closet? We're sure that you have a couple of pieces that you can no longer use nor save. If you have old skirts and dresses, you can recycle them into chic and quirky pillow covers.

You may choose to work with clothes that have bold prints or vibrant colors so your pillowcases can serve as accents, too!

  • Old dress or blouse (a full skirt or a long tunic can fit a 11”w x 22” l kidney pillow)
  • Pins
  • Sewing scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Hook fasteners or closures
  1. Choose a skirt or blouse that can fit an 11”x22” kidney pillow; get one that has a full skirt, or a flowing form and hem, so you’ll have more fabric to play with.
  2. Cut out the back and front of the blouse/skirt separately; each piece should have an allowance of 1 ½” bigger than the pillow on three sides, and 2” bigger on one narrow end.
  3. With the fabric in reverse, pin the front and back pieces together. Sew all three sides with a running stitch on a sewing machine. Leave one short end open, forming the “flap.” The “flap” should fold over to the back of your pillowcase.
  4. On your sewing machine or manually with needle and thread, hem your flap and the portion it will fold over onto.
  5. Sew on two fasteners or closures onto your flap. Insert your kidney pillow.
  6. If your clothes have embellishments, you can use them as trimmings for your pillow! Just detach and sew them with a running stitch onto the pillowcase’s ends.
