We've said it countless times before—your cleaning tools need cleaning, too. How often do you disinfect your washing machine? You'd be surprised how many homeowners take this trusty appliance for granted. Regularly hosing down your machine is important so you can maintain its quality and failure to do this can lead to bad odors, germs, bacteria and mold. Learn how to care for it with this handy guide:

What you need:

  • White vinegar or gentle bleach
  • Baking soda
  • Toothbrush
  • Microfiber washcloth

How-to:

1. First, turn on the washing machine. Fill it using the highest load size, hottest water setting, and longest wash possible. As the water flows, add a quarter cup of white vinegar or bleach—whichever you choose to use.

2. Next, add a cup of baking soda. Close the lid and let the washing machine do its job for a few minutes. Open the lid again and allow the mixture to soak in the tub for about an hour or two.

3. Remove any parts that you can (i.e. bleach and fabric softener wells, the dials, consoles) and soak them in the same mixture (which you can mix up on a separate basin). Don't forget to dry them thoroughly before putting them back.

4. After an hour, close the lid and allow the cycle to complete. While you wait, wipe off the nooks under the lid and on the sides of the washing machine.

5. Repeat the entire process. Run one more hot wash with a fresh batch of vinegar and baking soda in it to clean off any residue loosened and left behind by the first cycle.
