Sleep Tight

Q: I would like to ask for your help on how to design a 6-sqm bedroom. How can I maximize the small space? — Christabelle Matoza via Facebook

A: If the space allows, position your bed against the shorter wall. Try to go for a custom-made or built-in bed or so that you can have cabinets for your clothes underneath. You can then place a desk—or have one built-in—by the window.

Start Small

Q: I purchased a 25-sqm condo unit in Makati, and the layout isn’t that good. My challenge is how to make the place livable, having stayed in a unit twice the size of what I got. I also need help on how I can structure everything in a way that will fit all my things, including my bed. —Emper Mendoza

A: Moving into a small unit requires a big adjustment on your part, especially if you’re used to living in a much bigger space. First, you have to acknowledge the fact that not all of your belongings can fit into your new space. This is the perfect time to go through your things and purge.. Also, some of your furniture may no longer fit. If that is the case, it may be time to let go of the bigger pieces and instead go for multi-functional furniture—a bed that can double as a daybed/sofa during the day, or a dining table that can also be a desk and dresser. Lastly, make use of all available space. If your unit has a high ceiling, build a storage cabinet or construct floor-to-ceiling bookshelves.
