Decor Myth Busted: The Principles of Proportion

Three designers shed light on these popular home myths

Myth No. 3: The principles of proportion should be strictly followed.

Tess says that not every piece in a room should be proportional to the rest of the items. “One of the things that add interest to a room or make a room dynamic is contrast, which can be achieved through varying proportions of objects or even architectural elements.

A very large bed, a tall lamp, or oversize armchairs in a medium-size room can make the space look cozy and intimate.” In fact, if the furnishings in a room are too proportionate to each other, it can only make the space look “monotonous and flat.”
