Most small homes lack utility rooms where essential household chores like doing laundry and ironing clothes can be done. While some make do with any open area, it's still important to have a dedicated nook for these tasks. The key is to use the available space—it may be located near the bathroom or a corner in the dirty kitchen. Organize a mini utility area in your home with these tips:

1. Use baskets or crates for storage.

Baskets are great storage options to have in utility areas—a piece or two can make the area look less cluttered. It can also keep basic items like detergents, fabric softeners, laundry pegs, and hangers in place and still within reach, unlike storage pieces with lids or cabinets.

Find similar baskets at SM Home.

2. Invest in a foldable ironing board.

Since you already have a tight space to work with, make sure to use a foldable ironing board that you can swiftly tuck away in a corner when not in use. You may opt for quality ironing boards from Brabantia that come with a 10-year guarantee so you won't have to worry about squeaky hinges or loose screws.

3. Make use of vertical space.

We've mentioned it before—you just have to look up to see potential storage space. You may want to add additional shelving units or use the ceiling space to install a drying rack. Another option is to use the back of the door by hanging storage units for basic laundry items.

4. Get creative with hooks.

Maximize and use hooks to hang items like ironing boards and clothes that need to be ironed. Aside from hanging laundry nets and brushes, you can also use hooks to keep brooms, dust pans, and other unsightly cleaning items organized.

5. Opt for compact washers and dryers.

There are a lot of compact washers and dryers out in the market that can be pushed back and kept underneath kitchen counters. Some brands even have a combination of both washer and dryer in one appliance that can save a lot of space with the width and depth at 24"x24".
