Create A Cozy Sitting Area You'd Want To Stay In

While we can always relax and spend some downtime in the living area, there are days when we simply want to stay in a smaller and cozier space to read a book or catch up on a few flicks. A sitting area can function as an extension of your main living space, as a family room, or simply as a snug spot where you can meditate and unwind. For days when you want to do nothing, an inviting special area may just be what you need. Transform an unused space at home without spending a lot with these tips from interior designer Dagny Madamba:

1. Choose a comfortable seating piece.

Dagny suggests going for fully upholstered seats and cushions. A neutral-colored sofa will look extra inviting with the addition of a few pillows. For a cohesive look, choose pillow covers in gray, white, and light colors. If the space allows, feel free to add a bean bag and two floor pillows to accommodate more people.

RL Tip: "Limit your throw pillows to around three or four to avoid having a visually suffocating space," says Dagny.

2. Cozy it up with throws.

"A throw may come in handy, especially during the cold or rainy season. You can place it in a basket or layer it together with the throw pillows for easy access," says the designer. To prettify the space even when it's not in use, you can drape a throw over the sofa's arms. Pick pieces that follow your color theme.

3. Add a quality rug.

A lush pile rug not only softens the space, it can add a homey vibe, too. "It also comes in handy if you're hosting a casual get-together or having a movie night. Your guests can comfortably sit on the floor," shares Dagny.

4. Work with a calming room scent.

Soothe the senses and create a spa-like ambiance by bringing in a diffuser or a few scented candles. Scents like cinnamon, vanilla, or pine can add a calming feel to your nook.

5. Maximize natural light.

If you are using the space as a reading nook, make sure you make the most of the available natural light. An area near a window or balcony is your best bet. You can also invest in a quality floor or table lamp to further illuminate the space. "Ambient lighting is ideal. Warm lights are relaxing and can help set the mood," Dagny adds.

6. Decorate with plants.

What better way to make any area at home feel more relaxing than with a few potted plants? Choose air purifying green wonders or keep it simple with tiny succulents and cacti. For something hip, you may also want to add a pot of fiddle-leaf fig.
