Given that buying a condo unit is a huge undertaking, thoroughly reviewing brochures and checking amenities should be part of your must-dos. But if possible, it is also better if you can see the actual unit before signing the contract. You need to make sure that the space is properly planned and designed.

Interior designer Tina Periquet shares a list of things to avoid when scouting for a new home.

Low ceilings are less than 9 feet in height and will make you feel boxed in. According to Tina, the psychological need for a breathing space in a small room is much greater than in an average-sized room. If you want more space, opt for a loft—it has a double-height ceiling or a unit with a second level.

Badly proportioned windows with low headers and high sills will spoil your view of the outside.

It is difficult to work and move around in a poorly planned kitchen. Since you cannot simply renovate a kitchen without the help of a professional, you will be forced to to make do with the space that you have. It also depends on the building administration if you can do major repairs in the unit.

Bathroom doors that open straight into the main space will give your guests a view of the bath area and water closet. Make sure that the bathroom is properly concealed for privacy.

Consider not buying a unit that has illogically positioned spaces and elements. It can be distracting to walk into your home and be welcomed by a distracting beam in the middle or a column blocking your way.
