Building 101: Stone Varieties

Onyx, Granite, or Marble? Choose the right material for your home


Its use is often permanent, but natural stone is easy to maintain and is worth the initial investment. They come in a broad range of colors, patterns, and intriguing material properties that you need not limit its use to just bathrooms and kitchens.

Granite is ideal for kitchen and bathroom countertops because it brings a polished look and is highly resistant to bacteria and wear and tear. It also comes in a wide variety of colors that can complement any interior style.

Often used for flooring and wall cladding, marble’s most defining features are its veins and colors, which can range from creamy white to rich black. Capture its classic beauty with these faux marble tiles.

With its translucent surface and its different color patterns, onyx gives a dramatic, ethereal appearance to any space. It can be used for countertops and is best appreciated when backlit. Although pricey, its luxurious appeal is incomparable.

Sandstone, with its trademark grainy texture, comes in subdued colors of reddish brown, beige, and brown. It is ideal for architectural features like arches and pillars, as well as for wall cladding or flooring.

Usually in ivory or beige, travertine is softer than marble and granite. It can also be used for walls, flooring, countertops, and shower enclosures. You can have it polished or left rough and textured for a more rustic feel.
