A swatch board contains fabrics, interior finishes, and swatches—pinned together to create an inspiration guide as you finalize the look of your home. This tool is often used by designers so they can explain—through visuals—the plans for the interiors.

If you're planning a DIY renovation or makeover project, you can create your own swatch board. Here are 4 steps to guide you.

1. Choose your main fabric for upholstery, bed linen, or curtains.

Your main fabric will be the one with the most dominant and striking pattern and also with the most colors.

2. Choose your fabric or wallpaper coordinates.

Your coordinates are auxiliary colors that will come from all the colors seen in the main fabric. For example, a subtle color can be used as a background color, while bright colors can be used as accents.

3. Based on these fabrics, choose your paint colors.

Use a subtle color as your main color and drop by hardware stores to ask for paint swatches. Stick these to the board. This will help you assess if the paint colors go well with your chosen fabrics.

4. Pick out the floor material colors or furniture stain colors based on your chosen swatches.

Opt for what looks best and gives contrast to your selected colors.
